Question: My driving license dated year 2005 shows that I have been licensed over 4 years, and there are 4 stars under my photo on the G license. These stars issued because I submitted evidence of my previous Iraqi driving dated year 1972. The problem with insurance company they ignore that and charged me as if I am a new driver in Ontario , how I can Get my rights to lower the highly premiums that I pay since 2005 till now with the same insurance company " state farm " , please advice.

Answer: The four white stars indicate four plus years of driving experience, which means you can accompany a G1 licensed driver when they go out for practice. The stars mean nothing to an insurer however. If you want to lower your rate then you have had to provide letter(s) of experience from your insurers back in Iraq showing you've been accident free for 'X' number of years (probably too late now considering you changed your license over 3 years ago, but you never know).

What insurance companies in Ontario will insure a driver with 1 major conviction?

Question: I recently had a breath refusal charge. It was dropped to a careless driving charge. I currently have 2 minor speeding tickets that will expire before my next insurance renewal. What kind of surcharge am I looking at for the careless conviction? I also had a 3 month administrative suspension, will that affect my rates also? I have been with Facility before and am wondering if I can get a reasonable rate with 1 major conviction, G license, 26 year old male, no accidents/claims.

Answer: Careless Driving tickets carry a 50% surcharge with any insurer who will insure you, which won't be many. All of the good, standard companies will not even talk to you. There may be a few non-standard companies (Kingsway, Pafco) left who might be able to offer a better rate than Facility, however it's usually hit or miss with the non-standards. If all else fails the Facility association will cover you, however I can't guarantee you'll be able to afford their rates. Yes the license suspension will also affect your rates. You'll lose 1 year claims free. Plus with a careless driving conviction some insurers will assume that the ticket was associated with an accident and charge you accordingly until you prove that there was no accident involved with the ticket.
