Insurance For A G1 Driver

I have a G1, do I need insurance when driving with my parents, in their car?

Question: Like the question says.. will I need personal insurance? Since I will always be driving with my Dad, the person who has an insurance policy for that car, will his cover me? I read on this website ( http://www.kanetix.ca/forum/1334/g1-driver-do-i-need-insurance ) that the parent's insurance will cover a G1 driver. But is this a universal rule across all insurance companies? Thanks for any help.

Answer: Hi there, Normally, you still have to be added as an occasional driver. The car is covered, it's true, but still - if anything happens, it's better that the company already knew you were going to use it for practice. Hope this helps!

Can I be put on the rental insurance for a van with only a G1 if I have a driver with a G license with me?

Question: I'm going with a group to rent 2 vans. One preson with a G license will be driving one of the vans, and I will be driving the other. When we sign the rental papers and insurance, can I sign as a secondary driver with a G1? There will be G drivers in the van with me. Thanks for any help you can give!

Answer: It is totally up to the rental company. Some of them may allow it and others may not. Call the rental company ahead of time and ask what their policy is. Some rental companies have crazy rules like not allowing anyone under 25 rent a car while other companies don't care as long as they get their fee. Happy driving!
